Department of Pharmacognosy deals with multidisciplinary research and teaching space dedicated to the study of medicinal plants and natural products, encompassing their identification, evaluation, extraction, and analysis, with the aim of contributing to drug discovery and understanding the therapeutic potential of natural resources. The laboratory focuses on the study of medicinal plants and natural products, through practical learning and research and provides a space for the students and the researchers to explore the morphological, microscopic, chemical, and biological aspects of these materials. The lab typically houses a collection of crude drugs, instruments for extraction and analysis, and resources for identifying and characterizing medicinal plants. The laboratory provides facilities for extracting and isolating bioactive compounds from natural sources, which can be further analyzed and characterized. The students learn traditional systems of medicine including Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy where natural products are used as drugs.
Herbal Garden
The department houses a small herbal garden where a good number of medicinal plants those used in the traditional system of medicine are cultivated. Students are exposed to these living medicinal plants grown in natural climate for their studies.
